Rs 5,000-crore tea fund set to kick off

It’s the big replantation and rejuvenation (R&R) programme for the Indian brew. The much-awaited ‘Special Purpose Tea Fund’ (SPTF) for the purpose of R&R of tea estates across the country, with a corpus of around Rs 5,000 crore, is set to kick off next week.

Almost 800 tea garden owners will be eligible to draw funds from the SPTF conceived by the union commerce ministry and run by the Tea Board. Indications suggest that almost all big companies with huge plantations have applied for this fund.

It is estimated that the increase in average yield will rise from 1,662 kgs per hectare to 2120 and 2420 kgs per hectare for north India and south India respectively.
